This month we plan to hold 2 Springtime Churchyard Clear-Up Days. Strong winds during this winter have brought down some heavy boughs and branches and after the ravages of the winter months, the churchyard is looking a little untidy. There are a host of tasks that you can choose to do to suit your varying ability and energy levels.
On Saturday 16th March. We plan to concentrate on tidying the front and side borders of the church. The lavender planted on the front west wall has become leggy with age and needs to be removed and the ground prepared for replanting a new dwarf variety. Plenty of grass cutting, hedge clipping, border and path weeding on that day!
On Saturday 23rd March. Work on clearing and tidying the east boundary in conjunction with our neighbour continues. We need to cut back any regrowth in this area. It is hoped that by the end of this year, the dilapidated Victorian railings that are fallen and broken along this boundary will be removed, the bank landscaped and old railings replaced in a similar fashion to the work carried out on the north and south boundaries in previous years. There are logs and tree branches to be cut up and burnt for those who want a more vigorous work out! For those of a more delicate disposition, task priority will be given to clearing fallen branches, debris and litter from across the churchyard and graves that has accumulated over the winter months. This will make our churchyard look much tidier and remove potential trip hazards for those using our churchyard and its pathways.
Please wear stout footwear and dress warmly and appropriately for our unpredictable weather!
Volunteers can come and go as you wish, but work commences at 9 a.m. and finishes at 12 mid-day. Refreshments will be served in the church annexe.
If you are interested or would like to know more contact Robin Gosden on 01983 754110 or e-mail either directly at email@example.com or via our website ‘Contact Us’ webpage.
If all else fails, just turn up on the day at a time that suits you between 9 and 12…….we will be pleased to see you!
Memorial Transcription Work Days – Saturday 16th March and Saturday 23rd March
Work on the churchyard mapping project is nearing completion. Memorial transcription work however, continues with group Memorial Transcription Days being held in the churchyard on Saturday March 16th and Saturday March 23rd from 9.30 am.
All volunteers are welcome even if you have not done memorial transcription work before. You will be given all the information you need for safe working in the churchyard and the practical procedures for data collection on the day, so please come along for a taster session.
Information collected from memorial inscriptions, the grave condition, and its location will be transcribed onto a ‘pro-forma’ ready for uploading onto the Christ Church Burial Database on our website.
Once the practical procedures for data collection and safe working have been experienced, individuals will be able to visit the churchyard in the future as and when an individual’s time permits.
If you want to know more or have any queries please contact Robin Gosden on 754110 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org directly or via our website ‘Contact Us’ page.
